Settling in to Your Student Apartment

Ah, so you’ve walked across your high school commencement stage and are now ready to start the next big stage in your life: College. But before classes begin, you first need to get settled into your new apartment at the Junction Cottages & Townhomes.

Most people find moving into a new place hectic and nerve-wracking, especially when it involves roommates whom you haven’t met. We certainly have been there and get it! Which is why we’re here to provide you with some handy tips for your June move-in week. Tips that’ll help you get settled before your summer classes begin and, for those who wanted a summer break before fall, ensure you enjoy the most out of your first summer here in College Station before the craziness of autumn:

3 Tips for Settling in to your Student Apartment

  • Get or make a map. First things first, it’s important to know and understand your surroundings. The better you’re acquainted with your new location, the more comfortable you’ll invariably feel. Plus, it’ll make you feel more confident driving, biking, or even walking around town. Begin by mapping and knowing where the nearest grocery store and Target or Walmart are so you know where to go when you need to pick something essential up. Then find a map of TAMU and spend an afternoon walking around the campus. Find and walk to the general buildings like the library and recreation center as well as your upcoming classrooms.
  • Help your roommate and neighbors move in. Arriving early will allow you extra time to help others do the same. Few people enjoy the moving process, but helping your roommate or neighbor haul up a few boxes from their car is a great way to introduce yourself. Making friends and sharing new experiences is one of the best parts of college living, so why not start early!
  • Find a club, group, or sports team to join. Moving away from friends and family is hard and even the bubbliest of extroverts can have trouble making new friends. One great way to settle into your new home this summer is by finding people who share your interests. This is especially important if you don’t have a heavy summer course load (or any course load at all). Don’t know where to get started? Browse the TAMU Student Life Page, MeetUp’s College Station listings, or explore local coffee shop boards.
